A series of sports and recreational events will take place at 19 separate locations throughout County Clare this coming Sunday, 1 July, as part of Clare Get Active Day 2012.
The Day is an initiative of the Clare Sports Partnership, Clare County Council and the County Development Board, and is aimed at getting communities to become more active and use their natural environment.
Earlier this year, the Clare County Development Board, in conjunction with the Local Sports Partnership and the County Council launched its three year Sports and Recreation Strategy for the county. The strategy highlighted the need to ensure that there would be initiatives and activities targeted within communities and the home in order to provide opportunities for physical activity, recreation and sport.
Commenting on Clare Get Active Day, John Sweeney co-ordinator of the Clare Sports Partnership said: “This is a very simple concept. Clare has an array of beautiful outdoor facilities that are accessible and ideal for physical activity. We are getting communities to organise a minimum of an hour of physical activity within their area. Communities are organising activities that include Sports Blitzes, Walks, Cycles and Sports Days.”
“Over the years, Clare County Council has been at the forefront of helping to develop these spaces with funding and support for playgrounds, looped walks and cycle paths. We are hoping the people of the county will put them to good use collectively on Sunday.”
Events taking place on Sunday July 1st include:
St Cronan’s AC Sports day (12-18yrs) at Lees Road in Ennis (10am-12pm), Sliabh Aughty Loop walk (Suitable Footwear Required) for adults in Flagmount (10:30am), Killaloe St Anne’s Tag Rugby for adults (11am), West Clare Walking Club 5-6 km walk in Doonbeg (12pm), free swimming (please pre-book) at Ennis Leisure Centre, free swimming and tennis (please pre-book) at Shannon Leisure Centre, Fun Walk/Run in Kilmihil (all 12-1pm), a 4km Walk in Killimer, Family Playground Day in Kilmaley, Clare Sport Partnership 5km Walk at Lees Rd, Smith O Briens GAA Under 8s Hurling Blitz, Kilkishen 5/10/20km cycle (all 1pm), Fun Games (6-12yrs) at Corofin GAA grounds and Clare Crusaders Basketball Bonanza (16yrs +) at Ennistymon Leisure Centre (both 1-2pm), Family Tag Rugby at Ennis Rugby Club and Sixmilebridge 10km Family Fun Cycle (both 2pm), St Joseph’s Doora Barefield Sports Day (6-18yrs) in Gurteen (2-6pm), walk in Cratloe Woods (3pm), and Kilrush GAA Family Sports Day (4-6pm),
