The Burren & Cliffs of Moher, in conjunction with the Burren Outdoor Education Centre, will host the third annual Burren Geo-Explorer Day on Saturday, 30 June.
The day-long series of events will feature a guided family stroll along the Flaggy Shore, a caving excursion, rock climbing and hill walking. Geo-Explorer Day will be the final event of ‘The Burren Rocks’ festival, a month-long celebration of the geology and landscape of the Burren.
The day will commence at 9:30 AM with a guided trek on Turlough Hill where participants will learn about the geology and archaeology of the Burren from Dr. Eamon Doyle, a Geologist with the Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark. Eamon also will lead a guided geology stroll along the Flaggy Shore, near New Quay, from 2:30 to 4:00 PM.
Elsewhere at 9:30 AM, Colin Bunce from the Burren Outdoor Education Centre will host a Rock Climbing event allowing members of the public to get up close and personal with some of the Burren’s most striking cliff faces. Colin also will lead an introductory caving expedition at 2:30 PM, in association with the Speleological Union of Ireland.
According to Dr. Eamon Doyle: “The Burren is a treasure trove of archaeological sites, natural beauty spots and geological sites. Geo-Explorer Day is an ideal opportunity for individuals and families interested in the geology, history and archaeology of the Burren to learn more about the region.”
“We are delighted to announce that plans are already underway to hold another Geo-Explorer Day on August 16th, as part of Heritage Week. Further dates will be confirmed in the near future,” he added.
A cover charge applies to the rock climbing and caving events to cover equipment rental, while the other events are free of charge.
