Families from all over County Clare gathered in Ennis Cathedral at the weekend to attend the Annual Mass of remembrance and thanksgiving for organ donors and recipients.
Organised by the Clare Branch of the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) and celebrated by Fr. Tom Hogan, the Mass was attended by the Mayor of Clare Councillor Pat Hayes who afterwards met with donor families as well as local transplant recipients.
Also in attendance was Dr Con Cronin, consultant physician nephrologist at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital and St. Johns; nursing staff of Unit 7 in Merlyn Park and the Mid Western Regional Hospital; IKA National Chairperson Martin Doody; and National Transplant Co-ordinator Phyllis Cunningham and Clinical Nurse Manager II Maureen McNulty, both of Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
Speaking following the Mass, Mayor Hayes said: “I was very moved by the service which brought home to me the significant number of people in Clare and in even in my own Parish of Feakle that have either been either organ donors or organ recipients. I want to pay tribute to the many donor families around Clare for their immense courage and compassion in donating their loved ones’ organs. I also wish to acknowledge those who carry organ donor cards.”
According to Treasurer of the IKA’s Clare Branch, Peggy Eustace: “The purpose of the mass was to remember and cherish the memory of all organ donors whose passing from this life has given an incalculable gift to those in need. We thank the donors’ families who have shown generosity and compassion in donating their loved ones’ organs. These families have at a time of great distress for themselves remembered those who were awaiting the gift of a life saving transplant. This gift has transformed the lives of approximately 2007 kidney recipients in Ireland and many thousands of other transplantees around the country.”
“We are so grateful to our celebrant Fr. Tom Hogan for the beautiful and inclusive liturgy. His words were very consoling for the donor families in attendance. On behalf of the Irish Kidney Association, I also wish to acknowledge of soloist Catriona McNicholas and the Cathedral Choir, whose musical contribution added greatly to what was very special occasion,” Peggy added.
