Clare County Council To Honour President Of Ireland

Clare County Council will host a Civic Reception for President of Ireland Michael D Higgins later this year, it was announced today.

Áras an Uachtaráin has confirmed that the President, accompanied by his wife Sabina Higgins, will be present at Aras Contae an Chláir on Thursday, 14 June.

While born in Limerick, President Higgins was raised near Newmarket-on-Fergus, and educated at Ballycar National School and St. Flannan's College in Ennis.

Mayor of Clare, Cllr. Pat Hayes said he looked forward to welcoming the President and his wife to the Council Chamber.

The Mayor continued: “Many people throughout the County are proud of Clare’s close ties to President Higgins, and will be delighted to learn he has accepted an invitation to attend a Civic Reception in his honour.”

“In hosting a Civic Reception in honour of President Michael D. Higgins, the Council also is recognising the Office of the President of Ireland and all those who have held the role and represented the country with such distinction. A Civic Reception is the highest accolade at the disposal of Clare County Council for any individual, group or organisation and one that is, for President Higgins, thoroughly deserved”, stated Mayor Hayes.
