The Ennis Book Club Festival has been shortlisted in the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government awards, the winners of which will be announced later this year.
The eighth annual scheme is run in conjunction with the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. This year, a record number of applications were received – 101 applications from 26 local authority entities.
Winners will be presented with a specially engraved piece of Tipperary crystal and all those shortlisted will be awarded a Citation of Best Practice. Each local authority is also considered for the prestigious City/County Council of the Year or Town/Borough Council of the Year Awards.
The awards will be presented on Wednesday, 9th November in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin.
The inaugural Ennis Book Club Festival was held in 2007. The three-day festival, run in association with Clare County Library, attract hundreds of Book Club members and book lovers from all over Ireland and the UK to the Clare County capital every March.
Clare County Manager, Mr Tom Coughlan: “This nomination is the result of over five years of hard work by the festival committee who have contributed immensely to the town’s growing reputation as an attractive visitor location. The local authority, through the Library Service, is delighted to have been able to support the festival over the past five years.”
Festival Organising Committee member Paula Sheils said the award nomination would help to further raise the profile of the annual event.
“We are already preparing for next year’s festival, which takes place from 2-4 March 2012. The event is continuing to grow in popularity and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported us during the last five years”, Paula added.
The Ennis Book Club Festival programme features author visits, readings, musical entertainment, and lectures and workshops in various venues around Ennis.
