Initiative Provides Unemployed With Easy Access To Recreation

The County Limerick and Limerick City Local Sports Partnerships today launched a new initiative that seeks to promote participation among the unemployed in local sporting facilities in Limerick City and County.

Link2BActive is an initiative of South Dublin County Sports Partnership (SDCSP) and was first piloted in 2009.

The initiative seeks to link in unemployed people with local recreational facilities where, coincidently, pressure is also on from people dropping off due to economic constraints.

According to Phelim Macken, Sports Coordinator with County Limerick Sports Partnership (CLSP): “Being unemployed is a very frustrating experience. It can drain individuals of energy and affect their physical and mental health. We all know the importance of keeping our mind and body active but in a time of emotional and financial stress the cost of doing this can be a barrier. Now, through Link2BActive, twenty-five local sports facilities in Limerick are offering individuals  he opportunity to use their facilities from under €1 per day.”

Explaining the background to the initiative, Mr. Macken said: “We asked local sports providers to come up with an offer, complete with terms and conditions, for the use of their facilities by unemployed persons. CLSP has developed a page on its website (http://www.cllsp.ie/Link2bActive) with all the links to these facility offers.”

“We have printed promotional flyers containing information about the programme and these will be distributed through social welfare offices, general practitioners’ services, community centres and libraries across Limerick to inform unemployed people about the programme”, he added.

Speaking at the launch Cllr Michael Sheehan, Leas Chathaoirleach of Limerick County Council commented: “I wish to congratulate the  facilities that are participating in this initiative. Their support is indicative of the importance now placed on organisations, development agencies and individuals getting involved in promoting recreational activity.”

“It is vitally important that every member of the local community is encouraged to participate in positive recreational activities. After all, such activity can be significant in terms of health, balanced lifestyle, and community development and integration”, added Cllr. Sheehan.
