Clare Labour T.D. Michael McNamara says he has received confirmation from Minister for Education and Skills Ruairí Quinn that fourteen local primary schools and two post-primary schools have been approved funding under the Summer Works Scheme 2011.
The 16 Clare schools are among 453 schools nationwide to receive funding under this year’s Scheme which covers projects such as electrical, gas and mechanical works.
Welcoming the funding announcement, which is drawn from a national allocation of 41.2m euro, Deputy McNamara said: “The Summer Works Scheme is a vitally important scheme not only for its delivery of much needed improvements to Clare schools but the creation of jobs in the local construction sector during July and August.
“The Government is committed to delivering improvements in the quality of existing primary and post-primary school accommodation throughout County Clare despite the current fiscal constraint. The capacity of schools to take responsibility for delivering small and medium-scale projects is a key component of this scheme and I am delighted that 16 schools will benefit during 2011.
“The upgrade works will take place during the summer holidays so as to minimise the disruption to the schools in question”, he added.
