Grit Supplied To Local Communities In Clare

Clare County Council has, today Friday 17th December, advised road users to exercise caution as snow and icy weather conditions are predicted for the county.

The cold spell is expected to last up to Christmas Day.    The immediate concern is the potential for a significant snowfall over the entire country during the second half of today and overnight tonight.

Clare County Council is urging motorists to drive with extreme caution and to postpone any unnecessary journeys. While priority routes will be treated, motorists shouldn't make any assumptions in this regard.

In view of the foregoing, Schools Management should consider whether or not to close their schools in the coming days before the Christmas break.  This decision should be made having regard to local conditions.

Clare County Council has also delivered grit to 48 locations throughout the county, this can be used by communities on local public roads which are in need of attention and are not being treated by the Council.    With a view to ensuring that this material is used most effectively, communities are advised to prioritise along hilly sections and not to use it in private driveways.

A full list of these locations is available on Clare County Council's website at www. clarecoco.ie or by contacting any of the area offices.

The RSA has developed a dedicated section on its website www.rsa.ie to provide road users with advice in severe weather situations. It includes two publications entitled ‘Severe Weather Advice for Road Users’ and ‘Severe Weather Advice for Pedestrians, Cyclists and Motorcyclists’. The public also has access to a series of one page fact sheets for example ‘Top Ten Tips for Driving in Snow and Icy Conditions’.
Finally we would appeal to all road-users having regard to the above to take extreme care when using the roads and make sure this festive season is free from grief and tragedy.
