Minister for Defence and Clare Fianna Fail T.D., Mr. Tony Killeen as welcomed the allocation of once off funding for three Youth Cafés in Clare.
The Fishbowl Youth Café in Cappaduff, Mountshannon will receive €4,000. In Ennis, the Youth Space /Kick Back Café on Carmody St will receive €3,000 as will the Shannon Leisure Centre in Tullyglass. The funding is being provided from the Dormant Accounts scheme.
Commenting on the announcement, Minister Killeen said: “In the National Recreation Policy for Young People, published by the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs in 2007, Youth Cafés are named as a key need by and for young people. The policy was based on extensive consultation with young people. The Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs commissioned and launched two policy documents underpinning this measure: Youth Cafés in Ireland: A best practice guide and Youth Café Toolkit: how to set up and run a Youth Café in Ireland”.
“The Dormant Accounts Funding Allocation for Youth Cafes was split into two strands. Strand 1 supported small scale fit-out, refurbishment works or building enhancement projects to existing youth centres. Strand 2 supported the establishment of new Youth Cafés. The Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs announced the scheme in April 2010 and POBAL were engaged to operate the scheme”, he added.
