Mr. Tony Killeen T.D., Minister for Defence, presented the winners of the National TidyTowns Competition, from the Mid West Region, with their prizes at a ceremony held last night in Bunratty Folk Park, Co. Clare.
He was joined on stage by Dr. Vincent Cunnane, CEO, Shannon Development and Ciaran Levis, Sales Director SuperValu, the competition*s main sponsor.
In congratulating everyone involved, the Minister pointed out that 2010 again proved to be a successful year for TidyTowns with a record entry of 764 towns and villages.
The Minister said: “The Mid West Region once again performed very well winning 23 awards, with Ennis again leading the way. They won a total of 4 awards in this year*s competition including the Regional Award. The Region won a total of 6 medals in this year*s competition; Mountshannon won a bronze medal; Ballynacally won a silver medal; and Ennis, Kilrush, Adare and Birdhill all won gold medals.”
The Minister also congratulated the other award winners in the region noting that St. Senan’s National School in Kilrush won the SuperValu TidyTowns School’s Award for the Region, Adare won the Best Bring Bank Award for the region and Tuamgraney Community Woodland won the Notice Nature Biodiversity Award for the region.
Minister Killeen also thanked SuperValu for their support for the competition, which he said, “is all the more important in these difficult economic times.”
Ciaran Levis, Sales Director SuperValu, said: “The TidyTowns competition is organised by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and sponsored by SuperValu. SuperValu have sponsored the National TidyTowns competition since 1992.”
