The victorious Limerick Ladies Junior Gaelic Football team were honoured at a reception hosted by the Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council in Limerick County Hall, Dooradoyle, this evening.
Panel members and the coaching staff were acknowledged for winning the county’s first All-Ireland title on September 26th last.
Limerick came from six points down at half-time to eventually run out 4-10 to 3-8 winners over Louth in the Junior Ladies Gaelic Football final at Croke Park. The Limerick Ladies’ win means they will now make the step up to the intermediate grade in 2011.
Welcoming the team and their mentors to County Hall, the Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council said the victory heralded the start of a new era in Limerick Ladies football.
“The outstanding team performances during this year’s championship campaign indicate that ladies football in Limerick is very much on the ascendency”, stated Cllr. Richard Butler.
He continued: “What makes this All Ireland Final victory extra special is that it comes less than a year after the Limerick Ladies went down to Antrim in the 2009 decider. The determination and belief of this bunch of players is a tribute to everyone associated with Ladies Football in Limerick.
“Of course, achievements on the pitch emanate from hard work over a long period of time off the pitch. Outside of the obvious commitment of panel members, great credit must go to the coaching staff and background team, as well as the County Board. Behind every great team there is always a committed and capable management team.
“County Limerick prides itself on its sporting tradition and, along with every other supporter in the county, I am delighted to see that our ladies football side has established itself as a force to be reckoned with on the inter-county scene. I have every confidence that this team will continue to grow from strength to strength and that you will now be listed as one of the contenders for next year’s intermediate championship crown”, added the Cathaoirleach.
Cllr. Butler concluded the reception by presenting team captain Sandra Larkin and coach Tommy Stack with an official scroll to mark the occasion.
Last month’s All Ireland win caps off a very successful year for Limerick GAA. Earlier this year, South Liberties Intermediate Hurling Team won the Munster Intermediate Club Hurling Championship while Blackrock Junior Hurling Team became the first Limerick Club to win the All-Ireland Junior Club Hurling Championship in February.
Meanwhile, the County’s Senior footballers won promotion from Division 2 of the National League before narrowly missing on securing Limerick’s first Munster Final victory since 1896.
