Limerick County Council is hosting a wide range of activities and events to mark National Recreation Week 2010, which takes place from October 29 to November 4.
The purpose of the Week is to promote the importance of recreation for young people. Events will take place next week at various locations including Askeaton, Pallasgreen, Castleconnell, Bruff, Bruree, Kilmallock and Newcastle West.
According to Josephine Cotter Coughlan, Director of Services: “Recreation is seen as including physical activity, sport, arts and crafts, music and dance, hobbies and pastimes. It is important that our young people are encouraged to participate in positive recreational activities as such activity can be significant in terms of health, balanced lifestyle, and community development and integration”.
National Recreation Week events include:
- Local Sports Partnership: Older Adult Festival in Newcastle West on 10 November; Girls Active Programme 3-5 November in Kilmallock, Bruff and Bruree; Fit Walk Clinics in Castleconnell and Pallasgreen; and Go for Life Training

The strategy will focus on specific target groups such as children, youth, older adults and people with a disability, as well as areas of disadvantage.
