Council Welcomes Recycling Funds

Clare County Council has received €184,000 in funds towards meeting the costs associated with the operation of their bring banks and civic amenity facilities for the period July to December 2009.

Further funds will shortly be made available to cover the period January to June 2010.

Welcoming the announcement, Clare County Manager Tom Coughlan said: “Clare County Council’s funding allocation was based, as in previous years, on a combination of weighted tonnage and net operating costs, with particular emphasis being given to the higher costs of dealing with certain waste streams such as hazardous waste and plastics.”

He added: “The funding that has been received will assist the Local Authority in meeting the maintenance and operational costs associated with the recycling facilities at Shannon, Ennis, Scarriff, Lisdeen and Inagh, as well as the county’s 53 bring banks.”

“The provision of these recycling facilities has helped the Council in meeting one of its core commitments in the Regional Waste Management Plan for Clare/Limerick/Kerry. I would urge householders to continue to avail of these facilities and to recycle all packaging, and take empty bottles and tins to one of Clare’s many bring banks”, Mr. Coughlan stated.

Mr. Coughlan noted that Clare achieved a 38% household recycling rate in 2009 which, he said, has greatly reduced the level of waste going to landfill.

The €184,000 in funds received by Clare was higher than the allocations received by other counties in the region, including Limerick (€176k), Kerry (€157k), Galway (€156k) and North Tipperary (€113k).

The funding announcement was made this week by Mr. John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
