The first Social Inclusion Strategy for County Clare has been launched in Ennis today.
Clare County Development Board (Clare CDB) launched the 2010 – 2012 strategy which has initially focused on a number of target groups, namely Carers, Ex-Prisoners and Offenders, LGBT (Lesbian & Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) People, Lone Parents, Low Income Farm Households and People with Disabilities.
Speaking at today’s launch Cllr. Joe Arkins, Chair of the CDB stated: “Social inclusion has always and will continue to be a priority of the Clare County Development Board. The Board acknowledges that in times of economic difficulty that more people in our communities are experiencing poverty and isolation. It is important that we are aware of this and take appropriate action to address these issues”.
The strategy was developed jointly by Clare County Council and Clare Local Development Company (CLDC).
Doirin Graham CEO of CLDC said the strategy is not designed to attempt to address all social inequalities but it does attempt to bring agencies together to pool resources to address the needs of particularly vulnerable target groups.
The objective of the strategy, she added, is to “develop a set of evidence based actions which would impact directly and quickly on people experiencing social exclusion in County Clare.”
“As a result of the strategy process data in relation to social exclusion and research in relation to each target group has been collated. This information is an important resource which is available as a public resource from the Clare County Council website”, Ms Graham explained.
Cllr. Patricia McCarthy, Chair of the Social inclusion Measures group of the CDB commented: “It is our intention to develop appropriate actions for the remaining target groups over the next year. We will also review progress and closely monitor the impact of the actions identified in the action plan over the coming months. It is important that we are able to respond appropriately to the changing needs of those who are excluded from full participation in our communities and society in general.”
“Other strategies in relation to Homelessness, Immigrant Communities, Members of the Traveller Community and those experiencing difficulties with Alcohol and Substance misuse in terms of how they refer to County Clare will also be incorporated under this strategy”, Cllr. McCarthy included.
Copies of the strategy can be downloaded from www.clarecoco.ie or directly from the Community & Enterprise Directorate of Clare County Council.
