Ballyvaughan Boil Notice Downgraded, Partial Notice Remains In Place

Clare County Council announced today, following consultation with the Health Service Executive, that it is now in a position to remove a boil water notice affecting the Ballyvaughan Public Water Supply.

The notice relates to approximately 700 consumers in the Ballyvaughan area, including the Muckinish, Gleninagh, Gregans, Knocknagrough and Newtown Group Water Schemes.

The Local Authority said today that the majority of consumers can now resume normal use of the water supply for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth.

However, if you are immunocompromised it is advised that you continue to boil water intended for consumption or food preparation. Water should be boiled continuously for one minute before use.

In this regard we advise that unboiled water should not be used for:
• Drinking
• Cooking / Food Preparation
• Making baby feeds / bottles
• Brushing Teeth
• Making Ice Cubes
• Coffee Machines

A Council spokesperson stated: “The Ballyvaughan Public Water Supply is located in a very vulnerable catchment. In the event that the colour, odour and taste of the drinking water changes significantly all consumers are advised not to drink the water until further advised by Clare County Council and the HSE. The Ballyvaughan area will be supplied with treated water from the Ennistymon Water Treatment Plant by January 2011, after which remaining restrictions to the water supply will be lifted.”

“Clare County Council acknowledges the patience, co-operation and assistance of the general public during the period of the boil notice and greatly regrets the inconvenience caused”, the spokesperson added.
