Ennis Town Council has announced details of a free community day for local people to celebrate the anniversary of Muhammad Ali’s visit to Ennis in 2009.
The events take place tomorrow, Saturday 4th September, from 2-5pm in Glór and Ennis Town Centre and include screenings of a special half-hour video feature on the now famous visit in 2009, live music and street entertainment.
Ali, the three-time World Heavyweight Champion was named the first Honorary Freeman of Ennis in 1st September 2009 in recognition of his career achievements and his ancestral links with the Clare County Capital. Over 15,000 people watched ‘The Greatest’ receive a Civic Reception before embarking on a drive through the streets of Ennis and a personal visit to the ancestral home of his great grandfather Abe Grady.
The first anniversary celebrations commenced on Wednesday night with an event in Glór featuring former world boxing champion Barry McGuigan, the Kilfenora Ceili Band, and award winning broadcaster and world famous boxing commentator Bob Sheridan.
Tomorrow’s events commence at Glór at 2pm where a specially commissioned video feature on last year’s visit will be screened every half hour in Theatre 2. The Forever Young choir will perform in the foyer at 3pm while traditional musicians will also perform throughout the day at the music and arts venue.
Entertainer and busker ‘Little John Nee’, who is best known for his wonderful portrayal of the 19th Century Ennis circus entertainer Johnny Patterson, will be performing and entertaining families indoors and outdoors. Tommy Baker with Your man’s puppets will also bring his stage show to Glór.
Elsewhere, Comhaltas musicians will provide entertainment in O'Connell Square.
