Almost 400 athletes competed in the final Tri 3 Triathlon series event in glorious sunshine in Kilrush on Saturday last.
Patricia O’Brien from Ennis finished first in a race that was open to all levels and saw participants from throughout Ireland and the UK travel to the West Clare town to swim in the local marina, bike the scenic coastline and run through the streets of the historic capital of West Clare to the finish line.
The event was organised by Sports Academy International, in conjunction with Kilrush Town Council, the businesses in Kilrush, Shannon Development and Clare County Council.
Speaking at the presentation of prizes, the Mayor of Kilrush Cllr. Liam Williams commented: “This event has been a phenomenal success and it is fantastic to see so many local competitors taking part. Kilrush, as a heritage town and winner of three gold medals in the National Tidy Towns competition, can build on these strengths and be marketed as an ideal destination for triathlons and other sporting events.”
He added: “I would especially like to thank the Chamber of Commerce in Kilrush and all of the businesses here in Kilrush for their sponsorship and hospitality on the day. I would also like to thank Shannon Development for the use of the marina – both for the competition on the day and practice sessions in the run up to the event”.
The Mayor also extended his thanks to the event organisers and the staff of Kilrush Town Council and Clare County Council for their role in organising the triathlon.
The Mayor of Clare congratulated the competitors and thanked them for participating in the Kilrush event: “I hope competitors will return to Kilrush, either for sporting, business or cultural reasons, as they will have seen Kilrush is a vibrant town with excellent shopping facilities, business opportunities. They will have also learned about the beautiful Vandeleur Walled Gardens, Blue Flag at Cappa Beach, the magnificent marina and many attractive buildings”.
The Mayor of Clare referred to the recently launched West Clare Economic Task Force report and added: “This triathlon is a fine example of the people in the west working in partnership together. The business community, voluntary sector and public bodies have seen the benefits of working together for the development of the West and I look forward to such collaborations taking place in the future.”
