Minister for Defence and Clare T.D., Mr. Tony Killeen today announced that €504,000 would shortly be allocated to Clare County Council to assist the local authority in maintaining and operating its water and sewerage treatment plants.
The funding forms part of a national allocation of €20.5 million from the Local Government Fund and represents the highest figure being paid out to local authorities in the Mid West Region.
Minister Killeen commented: ““I am pleased that my colleague Mr. John Gormley T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government has acknowledged the additional expenditure faced by Clare County Council in maintaining and operating water and sewerage treatment facilities. I am very aware of the difficulties faced by Clare County Council and other local authorities throughout the country in meeting the significant costs of maintaining and operating water and wastewater treatment facilities.”
He continued: “I have raised this issue with Minister Gormley and I am delighted to see he has now taken a significant step toward alleviating this financial burden. It is important that provision be made to support Clare County Council in supporting its existing infrastructure so as to speed up the construction of necessary infrastructure elsewhere in the county”.
The €20.5m allocated this week is additional to the €870 million in Local Government Fund general purpose grants that the Department of the Environment has already notified to local authorities for 2010, and follows on from an additional €1.5 million from the Local Government Fund that the Department notified to authorities last April towards training costs in the water services sector.
