Students from Green-Schools all over Clare will show their support for a greener and healthier environment by participating in National Bike Week 14th – 18th June 2010, which encourages pupils, parents and teachers to cycle to school wherever possible.
They will be taking part in the Green-Schools National ‘Cycle On Wednesday’ (COW) on June 16 to help raise awareness of cycling as a sustainable mode of travel. The week is also a great opportunity to promote activities aimed at raising awareness of the benefits of cycling to school as well as the benefits of sustainable travel in general.
Róisín Ní Gháirbhith, Green-Schools Travel Education Officer said “Green-Schools is committed to promoting sustainable travel options, including cycling as a real alternative to the car. Cycling to school is a great way to be active during the day as well as reducing traffic congestion at the school gates. It’s also a great way to connect with friends and can benefit the community in so many ways”.
Róisín has teamed up with Clare’s Road Safety Officer Barry Keating of Clare Co. Council to coordinate a whole series of events for Banner Bike Week. Barry as Road Safety Officer is all too aware of the huge increase in car use over the years which equates with the huge increase in car accidents. He says “More cycling leads to less cars on the road which thus leads to safer roads”.
They have been working closely with many groups including the Garda Síochána, Tidy towns Shannon and Ennis, Clare sports Partnerships, Cycling clubs, Transition Town Ennis and Ennistymon and of course many green schools all over the county.
Diary of Events:
June 12th: Transition Town Ennis:
• Bring a Bike Back, 10 am to 2 pm.
Ennis Recycling Center, Gort Road Business Park
"The idea is that someone brings a bike with their regular recyclable waste and then we'll pay the €4 fee for them to access the recycling center. We'll be asking those who come to take a bike to make a donation of at least €4 to cover costs and any donations over that will go to the Brother's of Charity. We will be doing basic repairs on-site, like puncture-repair and oiling/adjusting brakes and gears, but we'd ask people to bring bikes that are in reasonable condition, no rust-buckets allowed. Colm on 0876295679.
