Mid West T.D. and Minister for Defence Tony Killeen confirmed today that efforts are underway to restore the once popular service between Shannon Airport and Bristol.
Minister Killeen said he has received a written response from the Airport Director on the issue, which he raised on behalf of a constituent who frequently travelled on the Bristol route before it was cancelled.
He explained: “Airport Director Martin Moroney stressed the importance of Shannon being connected to the West of England and recognised the popularity of the route. He said it was difficult to find alternative airlines which would be in a position to reinstate services to Bristol and other UK regional airports. However, he said that discussions are ongoing with airlines and that the airport is confident of delivering a satisfactory level of connectivity in the future.”
In a letter to Minister Killeen, Mr. Moroney outlined: “We are confident of restoring a Bristol service in the second half of 2010.”
He continued: “We have scheduled services here to the US with Delta, Continental, and Aer Lingus together with key short haul routes to three London airports, as well as Edinburgh, Liverpool, Paris and a number of European leisure destinations.”
“While our transit business is of vital importance, scheduled services are given the highest priority in developing our business – no demise is envisaged”, Mr. Moroney added.
