Minister of State Tony Killeen, T.D., presented 45 graduates of Ennis Community College with FETAC (the Further Education and Training Awards Council) Awards this week.
The students received FETAC Level 5 National Certificates in five separate areas, including Childcare with Special Needs, Nursing Studies, Community and Health Services, Legal Studies, and Secretarial and Business Studies. FETAC is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. The awards are quality assured, recognised by employers, and offer access to further and higher education and training opportunities.
According to Minister of State Killeen stated: "While some graduates are school leavers, most are mature students who have availed of the opportunity to upskill. I am confident that many graduates will proceed to secure employment as the abilities and skills of FETAC Award recipients are widely recognised by employers." He continued: "Many learners complete Post Leaving Certificate or Further Education and Training courses leading to FETAC awards with the specific intention of using their award to progress to third level through a system known as the Higher Education Links Scheme. The Scheme has been in existence for almost a decade and this year 29 higher education institutions, including Universities, Institutes of Technology and Private Colleges, are offering places on a variety of courses."
All FETAC awards are part of the new inclusive national framework of qualifications developed by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland (NQAI). This framework brings greater clarity to the Irish education and training system, making it possible for learners, employers and providers to understand and compare different types of qualifications. FETAC awards already have a specific placing on the national framework between levels 1 and 6, allowing FETAC award holders to progress easily within the system.
