Fears for the future of Shannon Airport's services to the USA have been further heightened with today's news that Aer Lingus' transatlantic traffic continued to fall in the 12-month period up to June 2009.
Aer Lingus said that it carried just over 1 million passengers in June, up 7.5 per cent compared to the same period 12 months ago. However, capacity on transatlantic flights fell by 16.3 per cent, the airline said this morning.
Last month, Aer Lingus announced that services between Shannon and Chicago would be suspended over the winter period, from 1 September. The airline said the four times a week Shannon to New York JFK remains under review.
