Tesco unions threaten strike action over Dun Laoghaire layoffs

Tesco is facing a new strike threat by its Irish staff over a plan to lay off 140 workers at its head office in Dun Laoghaire.

The Siptu union has told the company it plans to ballot its members on industrial unless the company enters into "meaningful discussions" about the transfer of the jobs to the UK, reports businessworld.ie. The transfer reflects the movement of key functions out of the country as part of the the chain's reduction in buying activity here for its Irish stores.

The union, which wants the job transfers halted until negotiations take place, claims that the company's actions on the matter stem from profiteering and greed.
