New figures from the Central Statistics Office revbeal that more males than females were born in County Clare in 2006.
52% or 909 of the 1748 births registered in the County were male. The figures show that 449 births were registered in Ennis, 43 in Kilrush Town and 1256 in the rest of the county. Overall, and in line with the national trend, the number of babies registered in Clare reached a 23-year high in 2006. The majority or 627 of the 1748 Clare mothers at maternity were aged 30-34. Just 58 were aged under 20 years.
Nationally, the highest percentage of births outside marriage occurred in Limerick City at 57.1% while the county with the lowest percentage was Galway at 21.6%.
Meanwhile, just over 22,000 marriages were registered in 2006, almost one-quarter of which were civil unions. A total of 631 marriages were registered in Clare. The average age of Clare grooms was 33.4 (above the national average of 33.2) while the average age of Clare brides was 31.5 (national average was 31.1).
Elsewhere, the CSO says just under 28,500 deaths were recorded nationally in 2006. 867 deaths were recroded in Clare (click on above image for larger view), the majority or 53% being male. Most deaths (260 or 30%) were among Clare persons aged 85 years or over.
