High seas drama as French sailors are rescued off Cork coast

A French father and son who were taking part in a race to the Fastnet lighthouse in west Cork have been rescued by the Baltimore lifeboat after getting into difficulty.

The Irish Independent's breaking news service reports that the pair alerted the Coast Guard after a large wave struck their yacht at 2.30am and swept them overboard. They managed to get back on board, but were unable to continue with the race because of a broken mast and other damage.

The men were towed to Baltimore Harbour, where they are now repairing their yacht before they sail home.
