Fine Gael MEP Colm Burke says the mid-west region could benefit from a significant injection of EU funds following the loss of 1,900 jobs at the Dell plant in Limerick, according to Breakingnews.ie.
The EC is making a €500m package available for unemployment black-spots in member states and Mr Burke says he has been assured that the mid-west meets the criteria in the wake of the Dell announcement.
The funds could be used to help retrain workers who are set to lose to their jobs on foot of the company's decision to transfer manufacturing operations to Poland.
