The mid-west region experienced the highest increase in the number of people signing on the Live Register last year, according to the latest figures from the CSO.
The statistics agency told Breakingnews.ie that the number of people on the dole in the region increased by 87% during the year and by 9.3% during the month of December alone. Dublin, meanwhile, suffered the smallest increase of any region at 65%.
Last week, the overall CSO figures for the year showed that the Live Register increased by 71% to 293,500 during 2008.
