Shannon Town extension approved

Mr John Gormley, TD, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, has approved Shannon Town Council's application for a boundary extension.

The Town Council's application, which was supported by Clare County Council, stated that the extension to the existing town was logical given that the residents of the area strongly identified with the town. A boundary alteration will entitle the residents of the area to vote in the forthcoming Town Council elections, which will be held in June 2009.

"I recognise the need to support the development of Shannon and very much welcome the opportunity to do so," the Minister said. By granting the application, the Minister has increased the population of the Shannon Town Council area from around 8,500 to 9,500.

The boundary alteration will be effective from 1 January 2009.
