Three cavers trapped near Doolin

A rescue operation is under way after three people became cut off by rising floodwaters in a cave near Doolin overnight.

The alarm was raised at around 3.30am this morning when one of the cavers contacted gardaĆ­ by phone, RTE News reports. It is understood the three are trapped in a cavern, although they are not thought to be in any immediate danger.

The weather in the area is poor with intermittent rain and strong winds. Rescue services warn the the group could remain trapped for several hours yet as it may take some time for rescuers to reach them. The operation involves Doolin Coast Guard, Irish Cave Rescue Organisation, the Clare fire and Rescue Service and An Garda Siochana.

The North West Clare area is renowned internationally for its caves system. The lunar-limestone region of the Burren is punctuated by a large number of active stream caves.
