A two-day oral hearing regarding plans for an Explosives Factory in Kildysart will get underway in Ennis today, according to reports from Clare FM News.Shannon Explosives Limited was given the go ahead for the 10 million euro industrial explosives plant at Cahercon, Kildysart earlier this year, but a number of local residents, opposition groups and An Taisce are appealing the decision to an Bord Pleanala. They will be setting out their opposition to the factory over the next two days while Shannon Explosives will also be explaining their plans. Shannon Explosives Ltd was given the go ahead to develop a €10 million explosives plant at Cahercon pier, Kildysart, along the Shannon estuary earlier this year, when Clare County Council granted planning permission to build the explosives factory, ruling it would not injure amenities in the area, nor would it be damaging to public health.
Shannon explosives is part of the Whelan's Quarry Group, and the company will outline it's plans at the Templegate Hotel in Ennis today with the promise of 50 jobs during construction, 35 jobs on completion and a 3 million euro boost to the west Clare economy annually. However groups like An Taisce, the Kildysart Explosives Factory Opposition Group, and number of locals will also be venting their long running opposition to the factory near the historic Cahercon Pier. An Board Pleanala is due to rule on the Kildysart Explosives Factory by the end of November.
