Opposition to Lough Derg water extraction proposal

Opposition is mounting this week to proposals to take water from Lough Derg or Lough Ree for a new supply to meet the growing needs of Dublin, the Nenagh Guardian reports.

North Tipperary branch of An Taisce spokesman Paddy Mackey said the proposed moves to extract water from the Shannon were happening so quickly that it was like "a smash and grab raid".

Mr Mackey, who is also a member of the Save Our Lough Derg Group (SOLD), added: "For years we have been fighting to improve the lake and all of a sudden people arrive from Dublin with this proposal to take our water away in a pipe. It is almost incredible that we are even giving this a hearing."
