A 67-year-old Clare farmer has ended his hunger strike as part of a dispute over the compulsory purchase of his land.Oliver Clune from Ballymacahill, Barefield, was jailed last Monday week for contempt of a court order to stop him interfering with Clare County Council's plans to build a new link road in Ennis. The dispute had been ongoing for 14 years and centres on a number of issues, including the level of compensation, which is believed to be in the region of €1.8m.
In a statement this afternoon, Clare County Council confirmed it had reached an agreement with Mr. Oliver Clune and his family in relation to the acquisition of lands for the provision of a new roadway at the Gort Road, Ennis.
"Clare County Council is satisfied with the agreement reached and, as such, the legal proceedings between the Council and Mr. Clune have been discontinued. Legal contracts reflecting this agreement are now being put in place. Clare County Council is happy that Mr. Clune has been reunited with his family and that the provision of the roadway linking the Gort Road with the Tulla Road may now proceed", the statement concluded.
