Dromoland Castle has been named as hotel of the year for 2009 in a leading tourist guide book.Respected food and hospitality writer Georgina Campbell has given the hotel the award in the latest edition of her annual guide on where to stay and eat in Ireland.
Dromoland Castle, which is set among 410 acres of parkland and woodland, is regarded as one of Europe's top luxury retreats. Originally the ancestral home of the O'Briens, the barons of Inchiquin and direct descendants of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, it has always boasted high profile residents and, in later years, celebrities.
Both former US president Bill Clinton and his successor George W Bush have stayed there as has Hollywood icon John Travolta.
