Halloween safety warning issued by NSAI

Children across County Clare are being urged to wear flame resistant Halloween costumes and reflective armbands or strips when out 'trick or treating', this weekend, by the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI).

Maurice Buckley, CEO, NSAI, said that parents should check the labels on all costumes and accessories to ensure they are flame-resistant.

"When purchasing a costume or accessories like masks, beards or wigs, look for the CE mark or the Flame Resistant label, which shows that the manufacturer has complied with national and international standards. Although this label does not mean these items won't catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source. Put strips of reflective tape on costumes to alert drivers that a child is on or near the road. You can get high visibility reflective tape in any good hardware, sports or bicycle store. In conjunction with putting reflective strips on the back of a costume, put some tape on your children's footwear for additional high visibility," he said.
