An application by Tesco Ireland to expand its current premises at the Coonagh Cross Shopping Centre on the Ennis Road is likely to met with staunch opposition from Clare County Council.Work on expanding the store, which opened 12 months ago, could begin as early as next year after plans were lodged with Limerick City Council. The multi-million Euro expansion of the supermarket giant, whose Coonagh Cross store is open 24 hours a day, allows for an increase in the food sales area by more than 600 square metres, and an increase of more than double this for the non-food areas, according to the Limerick Leader newspaper. The development also includes the relocation of the lobby, as a result of a new main entrance.
However, the plans could meet opposition from neighbouring Clare County Council, which last week formally objected to a plan by Mulcair Well Drilling, backed by local businessman Ger O'Rourke, to build a 17,000 square metre extension at the shopping centre.
