Bishop Walsh says Budget will adversely affect primary education sector

School cutbacks announced in the Budget have been attacked by the Bishop of Killaloe, Dr Willie Walsh (left), and the president of the Irish National Teacher's Organisation (INTO).

Both figures have hit out at 32 cuts which include increasing class sizes and limitations on language support teachers, the Irish Independent newspaper reports. "The fear is that the budgetary constraints as announced will have a hugely negative impact on the provision of primary education," said Bishop Walsh at the INTO's President's Dinner at Ennistymon.

INTO president Declan Kelleher described the cutbacks as "a devastating, swingeing and savage" attack on the education of four to 12-year-olds. "How can you educate our young primary school children in herds of 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32 and over?" he asked.
