Aer Lingus job cuts announcement due today

Speculation was growing this afternoon that an announcement by Aer Lingus regarding job cuts was imminent.

Unions were called into a meeting to be briefed on new plans aimed at dramatically cutting costs at the airline. It's thought that the company wants to outsource some of its operations, which could lead to 1,500 staff being let go in Dublin, Cork and Shannon, Breakingnews.ie reports.

Last month, Aer Lingus revealed losses of more than €20 million for the first half of this year, due mainly to rising fuel costs. Speaking on his way into the meeting, Jerry McCormack from IMPACT said that unions were expecting bad news:"I'm not going to speculate here either - certainly it's not going to be good, but we have to hear what they have to say and report back.
