A telephone pole standing on a public road remains a danger to motorists because of a row over who will pay for its removal. The Irish Indpendent reports that Clare County Council claims it wrote to Eircom six weeks ago asking it to remove the pole on a public road near Ennis. According to council sources, the telecoms company said it didn't have the money to do this.
But Eircom last night denied this and claimed an arrangement had already been reached with the local authority to move the pole. "If we are made aware of a dangerous plant or pole, we will move them immediately," the company said in a statement.
The pole was left encroaching to a depth of almost three feet from the kerb after the council widened the road six weeks ago. The local authority contacted Eircom regarding the work, near the main Kilrush Road (N68), but was told the company had no money when it asked them to move the pole.
A council source said: "It often takes Eircom a while before they move a pole, but to be told that they have no money to do it is a new one on me."
