Fitztgerald Ends Intercounty Career

Legendary Clare goalkeeper Davy Fitzgerald has reportedly announced his retirement from senior inter-county hurling, two months before the Banner's Munster championship clash with Waterford.

Thomas Crosbie Media reports that Fitzgerald, one of the best goalkeepers of the modern era, informed the Clare management and his team-mates of his decision after training last night. Last October, the 36-year-old had to have the top of his ring finger severed after sustaining a serious injury playing for Sixmilebridge in a club game against Crusheen.

He made a brave attempt to make a return at inter-county level in recent weeks, but it now seems that the finger injury has forced him to call it a day. Fitzgerald ended his 18-month absence from the Clare team earlier this month when he lined out against Kilkenny in a game to mark the switching on of Sixmilebridge's new floodlights.
