Clare Families Discover ‘Real’ Benefits Of Using ‘Real Nappies’

Clare County Council has expressed its delight with the significant interest shown by parents during a recent Real Nappy event in Ennis.

Over 50 families met with nappy suppliers who spoke about their products and their benefits for parents, babies and the environment. The new ‘Nappies Shouldn’t Cost The Earth’ leaflet was also in great demand. A real nappy is one that is washable and is used over and over again. Significant advances in real nappy technology mean modern parents need not return to washing nappies, safety pins and folding.

According to Cllr Patricia McCarthy, Mayor of Clare, “There have been quite a few follow-up calls and email enquiries since the event, so this is very encouraging. Modern mums and dads are conscious about the impact of disposable nappies on the environment, and they want to do the right thing.” The Mayor welcomed the launch of the real nappy voucher, which is a new initiative in Clare, Limerick and Kerry. “The voucher will make it more affordable for 10 lucky families to try modern real nappies, while at the same time prevent waste”, stated Mayor McCarthy.

Joan Tarmey, Environmental Awareness Officer, Clare County Council, explained, “Ten lucky winner of the EUR150 vouchers will notified within the next week. To be eligible parents much have a baby 18 months or under and agree to participate in surveys at 3, 6 and 12 months once they start using the real nappies.” “If you are one of the lucky winners, Clare County Council will purchase a voucher worth €150 for you from a real nappy company of their choice. This initiative will subsidise the cost of real nappies for your child”, she added.

The new Real Nappy leaflet is available from Clare County Council complete with a current list of real nappy suppliers.
