The latest development in cellular technology could soon provide a final solution for County Clare households that have been unable to secure a domestic telephone service. That is according to Minister of State and Clare T.D., Mr. Tony Killeen who has received confirmation from eircom that a number of Clare homes will feature in an upcoming trial of its newly developed Fixed Cellular System (FCS).
Minister Killeen explained that rural location and distance from existing telecommunications services had led to eircom classifying some local customers as ‘off network’. He continued, “This is despite the fact that eircom’s service provision team had evaluated a number of options to provide a service to them within the scope of the standard connection charge”.
In a letter to the Minister, Mr. Rex Comb, Chief Executive Officer of eircom, said that the provider of fixed line telecommunications had developed a Fixed Cellular System to provide telephone services to customers through its existing Meteor mobile service. “I have been informed that the new service is now ready to launch on a trial basis. A number of Clare households have been placed on the trial and an eircom representative will be contacting them over the coming days”, concluded Minister Killeen.
