Slurry Spreading Deadline In Clare Is Extended Following Recent Poor Weather Conditions

Clare’s REPS farmers unable to spread slurry on their land due to the recent inclement weather conditions have been buoyed by a six-week extension of the REPS slurry-spreading deadline

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food this week announced the temporary measure to assist REPS farmers. According to Tony Killeen T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, ‘The measure applies to farmers in REPS 2 and REPS 3 who are required to have spread all the slurry produced during the winter housing period by 31 August.’ The Clare T.D. said, ‘The atrocious weather conditions, particularly in County Clare and the Midwest Region, of the past two months have made it extremely difficult for some local REPS farmers to get their slurry spread by the end of this month’.

He continued, ‘Indeed, the Nitrates Regulations would rule out spreading in many areas at the moment. For that reason, I am delighted that Minister Smith has agreed to extend the deadline to 15 October, which is the deadline in the Nitrates Regulations themselves and also applies to farmers in REPS 4’.

Date Set For Exlosives Factory Hearing

A date has yet to be set for a Bord Pleanála oral hearing on a planned €10 million explosives plant on the Shannon estuary, according to Gordon Deegan in today's Irish Times.

Opponents and supporters of the controversial scheme have been informed of the decision to hold the hearing in a letter sent by the appeals board.

Last March, Clare County Council granted planning permission to the Whelan Group-owned Shannon Explosives to construct the plant at Cahercon pier, Kildysart, on the northern shore of the estuary.

It was the latest move in Clare's longest running planning saga that started nine years ago when plans were first lodged.
