An electronics plant in Waterford has announced plans to close its operation next year with the loss of 178 jobs.
ABB Transformers told workers this morning that the Tycor facility would be shut down from next March. The company is blaming the decision on a decline in orders and a lack of potential business in the market. The world's largest pipe-laying ship, the Solitaire, is due in Broadhaven Bay in north Mayo later today as part of the controversial Corrib gas pipeline project.

A fisherman has been taken to hospital following a rescue operation by the Ballyglass Lifeboat off the County Mayo coast this morning.
The man is understood to have collapsed on board a vessel in Broadhaven Bay. He was brought to Ballyglass pier by the lifeboat and transferred to Castlebar General Hospital. Source - breakingnews.ie.
