Man in court over Newtownards murder

A 35-year-old man was to appear in court today charged with murdering a man in County Down.

The killing happened in the Balfour Street area of Newtownards on Tuesday. RTE reports today that the suspect was to appear at Newtownards Magistrates' Court this morning and the charges will be reviewed by prosecutors.

Mulcahy is new Mayor of Clare

The members of Clare County Council yesterday elected only the second Fine Gael mayor in the history of the local authority with Shannon-based councillor Tony Mulcahy becoming Mayor.

Mr Mulcahy was elected by the three main groups, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Independents, after a powersharing agreement was struck between the groups.

The Shannon Councillor contested the 2005 General Election but narrowly missed out on being elected.
