Clonmel will buck the national retail trend next Thursday when the first phase of the Showgrounds Shopping Centre will open with Marks and Spencer as its anchor tenant.
M and S' request to open three months ahead of the rest of the Showgrounds Shopping Centre has been facilitated by the development company Greenband Investments and described by Centre Manager Julian Smith as a major confidence boost for the project. The remainder of Phase 1 will open on October 15.
The opening for business of the shopping centre will help arrest a E58m retail spend that is leaving Clonmel every year to neighbouring urban centres.
