An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission for a co-located private hospital on the grounds of Cork University Hospital.
The planning appeals body delivered its decision today following an oral hearing into the matter last year,a ccording to breakingnews.ie. A number of local residents' groups objected to the proposal, arguing it would lead to traffic congestion.
The €250m facility, which is due to be built by the Beacon Medical Group, will cater for up to 11,000 in-patients and carry out 12,000 surgical procedures each year.
Gardai and the HSE are investigating the theft of 15 laptops from a medical centre in Roscommon town over the weekend.
The HSE says the computers were stolen during a break-in at the Roscommon Primary Care Centre, reports the Irish Independent breaking news service. Thirteen of the laptops were encrypted to safeguard the information they contained, but the remaining two were not.
The HSE says it is working to establish what information was stored on those two machines. It also says the Gardai are following a definite line of inquiry in relation to the matter.
The drinks company Diageo has announced plans to cut more than 100 jobs in Ireland as part of a global restructuring programme.
The company, which owns the Guinness brand, says the lay-offs are designed to reduce costs and improve efficiency. It says 12 positions will be cut in Northern Ireland and 95 at the company's St James' Gate headquarters in Dublin.
Diageo says it will enter into a consultation process with employees with a view to achieving the cuts through a voluntary redundancy programme over the next three months.
