Gilligan in FG pact

Mayor John Gilligan has entered into a pact with the eight-strong Fine Gael members on Limerick City Council for next Monday’s mayoral election, scuppering any deal with the four Labour party representatives.

The deal means the next five mayors of Limerick City are set to be four Fine Gael councillors and one Independent, reports the Limerick Post newspaper.

Fine Gael’s spectacular success in scooping eight of the 17 Limerick City Council seats gives it the dominant presence in City Hall and in the lead up to next Monday’s mayoral election, the party has been engaged in negotiation with each of the other parties on the council.

Bord says No to Kilrush petrol station

Petrol retailers are welcoming a decision to block the opening of Tesco petrol station in Kilrush as a victory for small businesses across the country, reports Clare FM.

An Bord Pleanala has refused planning permission for a fuel filling station adjacent to Tesco in Kilrush on the grounds of road access arrangements and traffic safety.

Permission for the development had been appealed by local Kilrush traders and the Irish Petrol retailers association who said 43 West Clare jobs would be lost if the development went ahead, with local independent petrol stations unable to compete with Tesco's low prices.
