Counterfeit euro notes in circulation in Galway

Galway Gardaí have issued a warning after a large number of counterfeit €20 notes emerged in circulation in the city during the Volvo Ocean Race over the past two weeks.

It is believed that criminals had availed of the huge influx of people to the city to circulate thousands of euro worth of counterfeit notes.

Gardaí are concerned that with the Galway Arts Festival due to begin, followed by the Galway Races, that criminals will continue to pass the counterfeit notes into circulation.

Man to appear in court over Wicklow murder

A 23-year-old man will appear before Arklow District Court this morning in relation to the shooting dead last month of French national Charles Sinanapayen in Bray, Co Wicklow.

Mr Sinanapayen (32) was shot in the head on May 29th last at the apartment he shared with his partner in Richmond Hill, Fassaroe.

Mr Sinanapayen was killed when he went to the window of his apartment to investigate a disturbance. The Irish Times reports that he was shot by somebody on an external stairwell. Two men were spotted fleeing the scene and getting into a car. Mr Sinanapayen died from his injuries at Beaumont Hospital at 2am on Monday June 1st.

Silent march against child abuse crimes

A silent march will take place in Dublin today to show solidarity with survivors of child abuse crimes committed by religious orders.

Participants will walk from the Garden of Remembrance to the Dáil, where a petition will be handed to representatives of religious orders named in the Ryan Report.

RTE News reports that marchers are asked to gather at the garden in Parnell Square at midday and to proceed in silence throughout the march past the GPO to the Dáil.
