North West European Election Seats Filled

The three seats in the North West European constituency were filled in the early hours this morning.

Independent Marian Harkin (left), Pat the Cope Gallagher of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael's Jim Higgins were all elected on the sixth count without reaching the quota. After a lengthy count and a detailed recheck of over 500,000 ballot papers in the constituency, just 1,487 votes separated the three successful candidates at the end of the proceedings in Castlebar.

Libertas leader Declan Ganley resigned from politics following the election count.

Three County Clare Voluntary Organisations Receive Funding

Funds totalling EUR11,569 have been allocated to three County Clare voluntary organisations under the Government’s Scheme of Community Support for Older People.

The allocations to the West Clare based Ibrickane Network (EUR8,809), Newmarket on Fergus Senior Citizens (EUR2,060) and Ballyvaughan Community Alert (EUR700) will be used to help improve the security and social support of older individuals.

Commenting on the funding announcement, Minister of State and Clare T.D. Tony Killeen said he was very aware of the hardships that older people can face on a daily basis. He continued, “I welcome any initiatives that seek to improve confidence, security and comfort levels among older people in our society allowing them to continue to live independently.” The Junior Minister added, “The security devices that older people may now benefit from under this scheme include smoke alarms, the once-off cost of installing socially monitored alarm systems, security lighting, and window locks, door locks and door chains designed to strengthen points of entry to dwellings.”
