Limerick and Clare got a massive jobs boost today following confirmation that over 1,000 full and part-time jobs are to be created at Garraun, Clonlara.
Minister for Education, Batt O'Keefe, has announced that funding is to be granted for the construction of the multi-million euro graduate entry medical school building at the University of Limerick. The development on the north bank of the campus, between Cappavilla and the Health Sciences Building, is to create 150 construction jobs.

A new graduate medical school building in the University of Limerick (UL) is among the projects that will start construction this year as part of the Government’s €200 million building plan for the higher education sector announced today by the Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe TD.
Announcing the new building at Garraun, Clonlara today, Minister O’Keeffe said: ‘Building work is expected to get under way shortly on the new multi-million euro 4,000sq/m project. The new medical school, which will accommodate up to 288 graduate students, will have dedicated laboratories, facilities and equipment located in the university’s “health education village” where physical resources can be shared.'
UL is now tendering for a contractor to build the project and construction is expected to be finished by the end of next year. It is expected that the project will generate about 150 construction jobs.
The University of Limerick received planning permission from Clare County Council to build its €12M medical school across the Shannon from the main campus in November 2008.
